Education

I'm a college bound senior at Ames High School and will be graduating in May 2016 with a 3.8 GPA. In the fall, I'll be enrolling at Columbia University in the City of New York. My major will be either Mathematics or Philosophy, although I plan to explore several other areas. After college, I plan to go into a postgraduate program in either academia in hopes of getting a Ph.D., or into Law.

Experience

I've been tutoring as a volunteer at a local elementary school for almost three years, and I've been tutoring professionally for six months. My clients thus far consist mostly of elementary school students seeking help in Math, but I also have experience tutoring reading, writing, High school math, and test prep for SAT/ACT and AP tests. I love my work because of the clear and tangible impacts that I have on my students. Being the cause of a student gaining understanding, getting higher grades, or moving to more challenging material in school is the ultimate reward. I've taken comprehensive mathematics coursework at Iowa State University including Calculus III, Linear Algebra, Discrete Mathematics, and Abstract Algebra, so I'm prepared to tutor any subject in high school math and several college subjects. I've also sat in on a semester of a class for future math teachers, which has given me unique techniques to teach students. I scored 2320 on the SAT and 35 on the ACT, as well as a score of 5 on the following AP tests: Calculus AB, Psychology, Literature and Composition, and Physics 1.

Hobbies

During my high school career, I was an avid debater. Debate was really my first taste of tutoring, in a way, because as early as my sophomore year my job was to teach novice debaters how to debate. More broadly, the activity nurtured my critical thinking, public speaking, confidence, and writing skills, in ways I've passed on and want to continue to pass on to others. These days, I bike and skateboard in my free time and as a method of transportation. I read and enjoy being outside, alone in nature.
